Picking the perfect instrument for your child can be exciting! Start by considering their age, physical traits, interests, and what they want to achieve with music.
We've found that it's often best if the student can pursue the instrument that they are most drawn toward. We're happy to help you find the right one. To make it easier for you, we have instruments at the school for your kiddo to try out during their lesson and most of our staff are able to teach multiple instruments.
We also have a handful of instruments available to rent.
There's no set age to start music lessons, but 3-7 years old is a good range for intro classes like our Rockin' Tots - music exploration classes or our Keynotes Piano programs. By age 5, kids generally have better motor skills and attention spans, increasing their chances of success. We keep at-home practice expectations reasonable for young children.
Music lessons are fantastic for kids! They offer a bunch of awesome benefits. Not only do they boost cognitive development, but they also improve focus and discipline. Plus, they enhance coordination, spark creativity, and help kids express their emotions through music.
We prefer to call it PLAY instead of practice. Start with shorter sessions and gradually increase the time as skills build. For younger beginners, 15-20 minutes daily is great. Older students or those more dedicated may practice 30-60 minutes per day, 4-6 days a week. Adjust practice expectations based on the student's goals. At JAMS, we prioritize fun and enjoyment in learning. For many students, weekly classes or lessons are the highlight of their learning experience.
It is highly recommended that students have the ability to practice their instrument between lessons. We have rentals available or your instructor can help you choose an instrument to purchase.
